Artist Statement – Marion Adams

Marion is a Devon-based abstract artist working primarily with collage and mixed media. She draws inspiration from coast and field, woodland and moorland – landscapes of shifting light, colour, texture and sound that evoke or even demand a deep, emotional response.

Marion is also a published poet and, as with poetry, her approach to art is intuitive and experimental. While being grounded in the natural elements of her surroundings, Marion’s art is rich in symbol and metaphor, and focuses on the interplay between clarity and ambiguity, memory and imagination, and longing and belonging. Leitmotifs of movement, transience and flux intertwine with a foundational theme of heldness and connection within a still centre in work that is both personal and universal in its scope and intent, blurring the boundaries between inner and outer worlds.

As a significant element of her practice, Marion repurposes used packaging and cardboard, creating her collages using techniques such as painting, mark-making and mono-printing.

Marion is always moving towards purity and simplicity of expression, leaving room for and inviting the viewer to bring their own insights and interpretation.
